May 8th, 2017 was the date of my first of many colonoscopies. As a 17-ish-year-old kid who recently lost about 35 pounds, I was awaiting a diagnosis. The Doctor didn't “think” I had colorectal cancer, but he wanted to be sure. It was about two years prior that my family and I took a trip out west during summer break. After an extreme heat stroke episode I thought I’d never feel right again.
Between 2015 and 2024 every day was somewhat of a battle with my physical and mental health, from extraordinary gastrointestinal challenges like gastrointestinal reflux disease and eosinophilic esophagitis (EOE), to anxiety, and depression, I thought there was no hope. Thankfully, small parts of me kept hope alive. In the back of my head, I knew there was someone, or something, that could help - that could make a difference.
In late 2023, two years removed from moving from Michigan to Florida, I had an extreme episode of dysphagia and began to choke on my food. I knew I shouldn’t eat pizza, but it tasted good and I was feeling so poorly that the reward of flavor seemed greater than the fear of pain. After such an event, I knew that I had to make drastic changes in my life in order to experience the future.
Uncle Steve, a medical doctor in my family, continued to encourage me to pursue functional medicine as an alternate approach. I then found Dr. Joanne Pizzino (Dr. JP). It was during my initial appointment that I knew that my life was going to change forever. It was kind words that she said to me, “I want you to live a vibrant life”. I asked her if she thought the resolution of my illness was possible. She responded, “Yes, I do”. After that appointment, I had tears in my eyes. For the first time, I felt real hope. Almost one year after beginning to see Dr. Pizzino I have a renewed excitement for each day; I have a new ability to connect and know myself and others. Time is the only thing we can never get back and I am so thankful for the time I will spend on this earth.
Dr. Joanne Pizzino not only changed my life, she saved it. And for that, I will forever be grateful.
I hung out for the first time with my now girlfriend, Ella, on Thanksgiving 2024. Without newfound health, a deep connection like this would have never been possible for me.
